Nearly a dozen people have been killed, and several others sustained injuries when Saudi fighter aircraft carried out airstrikes against a civilian neighborhood on the outskirts of the Yemeni capital Sana’a amid Riyadh’s ongoing onslaught against the Arab country, local officials said.
The al-Masirah television channel, citing the officials, reported that the Saudi air raids targeted several buildings in the al-Sharia area of the Bani Hushaysh district on Saturday afternoon, killing at least 11 individuals, including women and children, and injuring more than 20 others.
Paramedics have reportedly launched search and rescue operations to retrieve people trapped under the rubble of five houses destroyed in the Saudi airstrikes.
Eyewitness and local sources reported that Saudi warplanes also bombed roads leading to the scene of the deadly aerial attack in an attempt to obstruct rescue efforts.
A cameraman for al-Masirah TV was injured as Saudi aircraft targeted paramedics and residential buildings in the Bani Hushaysh district.
Elsewhere in the northwestern province of Sa’ada, five Saudi aerial attacks struck the Maran Walad Ja'shan region. There were no immediate reports of possible casualties or the extent of damage caused.
A civilian also sustained wounds when Saudi forces opened fire on residents in the border district of Shada'a.
The latest escalation in Yemen began after Saudi Arabia bombed Sana'a's international airport in July. The Yemeni Armed Forces responded by attacking Saudi airports, oil facilities, and tankers in the Red Sea, and also enforcing a “blockade for blockade” policy.
In March 2015, Saudi Arabia launched a devastating bombing campaign against Yemen to restore a Riyadh-friendly government in Sana'a and imposed a blockade on the country, triggering one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
