The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has said the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza is a disgrace to the international community after displaced people’s tents were flooded with heavy rainfall.
In a statement on Saturday, the Gaza-based resistance group’s spokesperson, Hazem Qassem, said the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the suffering endured by families after hundreds of tents were flooded by heavy rain amid tragic circumstances “leave a stain on the conscience of the international community.”
He also slammed the international community for remaining “incapable of compelling the Zionist occupation to lift its unjust siege on Gaza.”
Qassem emphasized that responsibility for this humanitarian disaster lies not only with the “Zionist enemy” but also with the relevant international bodies, including the so-called “Board of Peace” and its representative Nikolay Mladenov, who has failed to fulfill his role in ensuring the delivery of humanitarian and relief aid to Gaza, and remained silent regarding the crime of besieging more than two million Palestinians in Gaza.
“The worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip requires mediators to assume their full responsibilities under the agreements reached and work seriously to compel the occupation to fulfill its obligations, particularly the delivery of humanitarian aid and the necessary shelter supplies to help our people alleviate their ongoing suffering,” Qassem added.
Qassem also called on the Arab League to take urgent and effective action to save Gaza from the ongoing humanitarian disaster, in line with the principles and objectives upon which the League was founded, and in a manner that reflects its national and humanitarian responsibility towards the Palestinian people.
The statement comes as Gaza’s displaced population continues to depend heavily on temporary shelters and humanitarian aid.
Flooding and severe weather have compounded the effects of displacement, shortages of basic supplies, and widespread destruction caused by the ongoing Israeli regime forces genocidal war on the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Since the Israeli regime began the Gaza genocide on October 7, 2023, 74,618 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
