South Africa’s Ramaphosa says US midterm results could usher in a ‘new era’ in global relations

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says Democrats’ gains in the US midterm elections could herald a new era in global relations and ease strained ties with Washington.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says the Democrats’ sweeping gains in the US midterm elections could herald a “new era in world relations” and help ease strained ties between Pretoria and Washington.

His remarks come as South Africans head to the polls on Wednesday in local elections that are expected to test support for the African National Congress (ANC), which led the country out of apartheid but has steadily lost ground over the past decade.

The elections will determine leadership in South Africa’s eight metropolitan municipalities, as well as 44 district municipalities and 205 local councils.
