Hundreds of citizens, both supporters and opponents of the government, demonstrated on Tuesday in front of the Constitutional Court building in the Polish capital, Warsaw, amid a heavy security presence and barriers that separated the two gatherings, against the backdrop of a political crisis that has escalated in recent days, coinciding with a general assembly of the court.
Opponents of the government gathered in front of the building, reciting the rosary, and some of them raised flags bearing the image of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, while Przemysław Czarnik, the Law and Justice Party's candidate for prime minister in the upcoming parliamentary elections, delivered a speech to those present.
On the other hand, police cordoned off the surroundings of the court and separated a group of government supporters from the other gathering, in a measure aimed at preventing friction between the two sides.
These movements come in the context of a political crisis over the Constitutional Court and its role, amid a division between government supporters and opponents over the independence of the judicial institution and the limits of political authorities' influence over it.
