Leila Hatoum, editor-in-chief of MENA Uncensored, says the Israeli regime’s approach toward its regional neighbors and the Palestinian issue remains largely unchanged regardless of who emerges victorious in any future election.
The analyst said that whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu retains power or a rival such as Gadi Eisenkot gains influence, Israeli policies including continued pressure on Palestinians, as well as ongoing tensions with Lebanon and Syria are expected to remain broadly consistent.
Netanyahu, the analyst noted, has historically relied on coalition-building with smaller and right-wing parties to maintain power, enabling him to navigate periods of political uncertainty and remain a dominant actor in Israeli politics.
Addressing the participation of Palestinian citizens who hold Israeli passport in elections, the analyst questioned the practical impact of increased Arab voter turnout, arguing that electoral gains alone have not translated into decisive influence within Israel's political system. While acknowledging that Arab political representation has expanded, the analyst contended that such representation has not been sufficient to alter core policies affecting Palestinians.
According to the analyst, even if Arab parties or representatives were to play a larger role in coalition politics, this would not necessarily result in significant changes to Israel's approach toward the Palestinian issue.
She predicted a more difficult period for Palestinians, asserting that electoral competition within Israel is likely to encourage political leaders to appeal to right-wing voters rather than pursue major policy changes regarding the Palestinian question.
