Countering US unilateralism

Iran's president says countries in the West Asia region are totally capable of overcoming regional challenges without dependence on the United States. Masoud Pezeshkian made the remarks in a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on the sidelines of the 8th Gas Exporting Countries Forum Summit in Moscow. Slamming Washington’s unilateral measures in the region, he said such measures make the necessity of strengthening multilateralism and expanding interactions among countries under US sanctions even more evident. Pezeshkian emphasized that Tehran and Moscow are determined to develop all-out relations in the scientific, economic, industrial, cultural, security, and military sectors. Addressing the forum ahead of his meeting with Putin, Iran's president said the US-Israeli aggression against Iran and strikes on the country’s energy infrastructure threaten global security. He added that US military activities in the Persian Gulf have disrupted energy prices, supply and transit; threatening global economic growth.

Israel general election

Vote counting is underway after polls closed in Israel's general election, which saw high voter turnout and the regime’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fighting for his political life. Although first election exit polls showed a narrow edge for the opposition, new polls showed Netanyahu's bloc was even with the opposition. The results show neither Netanyahu, nor his main rival, Gadi Eisenkot, are on track for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. The exit polls also show strong gains for Arab-majority parties, with the two Arab lists winning 17 or 18 seats in the Knesset. After the vote closed, Netanyahu’s main contender, Eisenkot, said the results show 'lack of confidence' in the regime’s prime minister, while Israel opposition leader, Yair Lapid, said Netanyahu suffered 'crushing defeat'. Netanyahu’s Likud Party had asked election authorities to keep polls open past 10 pm local time, but the request was rejected by the Central Elections Committee. While the leader of a key Arab party accused Netanyahu of incitement during the election, opposition figures also accused him of fear-mongering in order to mobilize right-wing voters.

Brazil presidential election

Brazil’s defeated right-wing presidential candidate, Flavio Bolsonaro, has fled the country and is traveling to the United States despite a court order banning him from leaving the country. According to US media reports, , citing an anonymous official source, the 45-year-old son of jailed ex-president, Jair Bolsonaro, is heading to Florida. Bolsonaro lost elections to incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday, and despite conceding defeat, said he will file a case seeking to disqualify Lula’s election ticket. On Monday, the right-wing senator said a Supreme Court justice had ordered him to hand over his passports. Bolsonaro is under investigation for alleged corruption and money laundering, and with his election loss, is also set to lose his parliamentary immunity. Reacting to US media reports, President da Silva said it would be "shameful" if Bolsonaro had fled to the United States. He added that a person who sneaks out of their country must have something to hide. The US State Department has announced that it will issue visas to Bolsonaro and his family, without confirming his travel plans.
