Yemenis rally in capital to condemn Saudi attacks

Thousands of people hold a rally in the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, to condemn the military strikes by Saudi Arabia against their country.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the Yemeni capital, Sana’a, to condemn the deadly military strikes by Saudi Arabia against their country.

The protesters converged in Sana’s following Friday prayers, chanting, “Saudis are cowards,” and, “Saudis are agents of Americans.”

The demonstrators said the barbaric Saudi attacks will not stop them from supporting their revolution, and that they will remain steadfast until democracy is restored in Yemen.

They also called for an international investigation into the crimes being perpetrated by Saudi Arabia during the ongoing military onslaught against its impoverished southern neighbor.

The marchers urged the international community to work for an end to the unjust Saudi blockade of Yemen.

The demonstration came as the death toll from the recent Saudi aerial offensive in the northwestern province of Sa’ada has climbed to 52, with women and children mostly among the dead.

Saudi warplanes struck ten residential buildings in the Sahar district of the arid and mountainous province, on June 3, killing tens of civilians, including minors. The incessant Saudi strikes prevented medical teams from reaching the area, leaving injured civilians without access to life-saving help and entire families without assistance in removing the bodies of their loved ones.

On Friday, at least eight people were killed when Saudi warplanes pounded a residential area in Ghamar district of Sa’ada. The Houthi Ansarullah movement, in a post published on its Twitter account, indentified the victims as all members of a family.

Elsewhere in the same province, 19 civilians lost their lives when Saudi aircraft bombarded Bani Siyah area in Razeh District, Arabic-language al-Masirah satellite television network reported.

Massive explosions also shook the Yemeni capital as Saudi warplanes launched airstrikes against the headquarters of the Special Security Forces.

Saudi fighter jets also launched multiple airstrikes against al-Najd al-Ahmar in Yemen’s central province of Ibb. There were no immediate reports of possible casualties and the extent of damage the assault inflicted.

Saudi Arabia started its military aggression against Yemen on March 26 – without a UN mandate – in a bid to undermine Ansarullah, which currently controls the capital, Sana’a, and major provinces, and to restore power to Yemen’s fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is a staunch ally of Riyadh.
