Two Egyptian policemen have been shot dead in Giza Province, near the western outskirts of the capital city, Cairo.

Major General Magdi Abdul Aal, the chief of the Giza Investigation Department, said on Wednesday that “two policemen were killed and four others survived unhurt” in the attack near the Great Giza Pyramids, the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The incident happened when masked assailants on a motorbike attacked Egypt’s tourism and antiquities police forces on guard about 30 meters from their security checkpoint.

The attack has not been claimed by any group yet.

Since the July 2013 ouster of Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, militants have frequently launched similar terrorist attacks, targeting security forces in the North African country.

In the restive North Sinai region, security forces reportedly killed more than 140 suspected militants, and arrested nearly 400 others either in various raids or while defending checkpoints over the past month.

The government of Egypt’s incumbent President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who toppled Morsi in the 2013 military coup, has frequently blamed Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi rose to power, for the violence. The group, however, denies such allegations.
